Hanover was originally called Buck's Crossing, after settler Abraham Buck, and was renamed by German settlers from Waterloo. Christian Hasenjan of Hanover Germany arrived in 1849. His house was always open for religious services. The town is named either after the Royal House of Hanover or after the city of the same name in Germany.
