  • unusually sleepy;
  • not able to see clearly;
  • acting angry or sad for no reason; or unsteady on your feet.

  How to treat low blood glucose

 Test your blood glucose.

 

  Eat or drink a form of sugar such as:

§          3 glucose tablets;

§          4 to 6 "Life SaversTM";

§          1/2 cup of unsweetened juice or regular pop;

§          1 tablespoon of honey,

 Wait 10 to 15 minutes, then test your blood glucose again.

 If it is still low:

 Treat again.

 If your next meal is more than 1/2 hour away, or you are going to be active, eat a snack, such as 1/2 a sandwich or cheese and crackers (something wrth carbohydrate).

 

  What to do if you can't test your blood glucose level.

 Treat your symptoms. It is better to be safe.

 Carry your meter with you at all times. Then you can check your blood glucose level and be sure.

 Talk to your doctor or diabetes educator about emergency treatment for unconsciousness due to low blood glucose.

 

What causes high blood glucose?

 High blood glucose cari result when food, activity and insulin are not balanced. High blood glucose may happen when you are sick or under stress.

 

  The signs of high blood glucose.

 When your blood glucose rises above 10 mmol/L you may be:

 

  • thirsty
  • urinating more often
  • tired

  What to do if your blood glucose is high?

 If you have type 2 diabetes call or see your doctor. If you have type 1 diabetes test your urine for ketones. Ask your pharmacist about ketone testing supplies. Seek medical advice immediately If ketones are present
