What do I need to know
about blood glucose
level?
You
need to know what your blood glucose target ranges should be.
Ask
your doctor:
- What
should my blood glucose range be when I wake up and test it in the morning?
- What
should my blood glucose range be before l eat each meal?
- What
should my blood glucose range be before I go to bed?
- What
should my blood glucose range be before I exercise?
How
to test your blood glucose level.
You
can use a visual strip or a meter. Both ways require a finger prick and a small drop of
blood placed on a test strip.
Talk
to your doctor or diabetes educator about the various methods, and which one is right for
you.
When
you decide, make sure you receive the proper training.
Ask
about:
- the
size of the drop of blood;
- the
type of test strips to use;
- how to check to see if your meter is accurate.
Your
province or territory may subsidize the cost of injection and testing supplies.
Call
your local Canadian Diabetes Association office to find out if this applies to you.
