What do I eat?

When carefully planned, you can enjoy a wide variety of your favourite foods -it is a matter of how much and when. Healthy eating and watching your weight are important to help manage your diabetes. A registered dietitian can provide you with more information about eating healthy meals.

In the meantime, follow these easy steps to get you started:

    • Always eat three meals each day and allow four to six hours between meals;
    • If you snack between meals and at bedtime, keep them small;
    • Have a starchy food at each meal (such as bread, pasta, potato, rice);
    • Include a food from each of the four food groups at each meal;
    • If you are overweight, eat smaller portions;
    • If you are thirsty, drink as much water or diet pop as you like (drink juice in small amounts).

Eat less of the following foods until you see a dietitian:

  • Sweets such as regular pop, large amounts of juice, pie, iced cookies and cakes, chocolate bars, candy, honey and table sugar;
  • Fatty foods such as french fries, deep fried foods, donuts, excessive margarine and butter, processed meats (salami, wieners), coffee creams, high fat dairy product (homogenized milk, ice cream).

A dietitian can show you how to work some of these foods into your meal plan. But for now, it is important to lower your blood sugar.

Take action

Check the following each day:

  • I had three meals today, including breakfast.
  • I allowed four to six hours between each meal.
  • My portion sizes will help me reach or maintain a healthy body weight.

I had a starchy food (pasta, bread, rice, cereal)at each meal.
